  1. Is Australia's economy in for a rough ride

Posted by Janene Murdoch on 11th Jul 2011

When I was asked to review a book on inflation in Australia I searched around to see what was up-to-date, relevant, Australian, but most importantly, readable. There are many papers and reports on the topic but nothing that I could find for the lay person wanting to know and understand more.

“Endgame” came across my desk as a new title, written in 2011 by John Mauldin. I had read some of John’s earlier books, such as “Empire of Debt”, so I knew he was able to get his message across in a very reader friendly way. This is an American book, however it is not merely written for the American market. When I started to flick through the pages I found chapters on England, Eastern Europe, Japan – and Australia, not to mention the basket cases of Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

As Australia was featured, I went to this chapter first, confident that the book would improve my understanding of where Australia fitted into the big picture. I was both fascinated and a little scared by what I read. Whilst I was reading the chapter my mind was racing. Everything he was writing about was happening right now - this minute. High interest rates, the high AUD, a one gear economy driven by the resources boom, and our reliance on China, not to mention our housing bubble, one of the few countries in the world where it hasn’t burst. Mauldin has drawn on some the world’s best economist’s graphs and charts to support his argument, and read in conjunction with the rest of the book it gives a very valuable insight into where and how Australia fits into the global economy.

Dare I say it may even give us a glimpse of what the future holds for us.
